Mixed pipework and misleading leaks
Where galvanised, copper and modern materials meet in one system, joints corrode at the transitions. A seep at a dielectric union or a corroded nipple at the top of the tank runs down the outside and collects at the base, which is indistinguishable from a failed tank until everything is dried and watched.
That distinction decides whether the answer is a fitting or a new heater, which is why leak repair starts with finding the source rather than assuming it.
Pressure and expansion
Service connection upgrades have quietly turned many properties into closed systems. The first symptom is usually a relief valve discharging periodically, sometimes accompanied by banging pipes when a tap shuts. Both point at thermal expansion with nowhere to go, and at an expansion tank that is either absent or waterlogged.
An expansion tank that has failed sounds solid all over when tapped and feels much heavier than it should. It is a two-minute check that explains a lot of confusing symptoms.

Questions we get asked
How do I check whether my expansion tank has failed?
Tap it near the top and near the bottom. A working tank sounds hollow above the bladder and solid below. One that sounds solid throughout and feels heavy is waterlogged.
My pipes bang when the washing machine shuts off. Related to the heater?
Not directly a heater fault, but a failed expansion tank removes the cushion that absorbs those pressure spikes and makes water hammer noticeably worse.
